AUDIO FORMATS CALLIA supports linear PCM in 2’s complement binary coding and, using the “DSD over PCM” (DOP) protocol, DSD at the original bit-rate (DSD64) and also at 2 x the original rate (DSD128). DSD Files encoded as “DOP” may be played with both ASIO and WDM drivers. Your computer, tablet or transport will commonly decode formats such as mp3 to PCM prior to transmission to the sound card, so these formats will typically be supported on your device in the same manner as they would be with another sound card. On the S/P-DIF inputs, DOP can also be used, but only at the original DSD bit rate (DSD64) as these connections do not have enough bandwidth for DSD128. The ASIO native DSD format is not currently supported. The Bricasti Design M1 USB digital to analog converter is a dual mono design; there are 2 completely isolated channels, a left and right, each with its own dedicated linear power supply, D/A converter, DDS clocking, and analog circuitry. This design insures that analog cross talk is virtually non existent, that the necessary power requirements for each channel are well met and isolated from each other and the digital processing is isolated, having its own power supply. With our twin DAC design, the dynamic range for each channel is optimized by using the stereo ADI 1955 D/A converter in a mono configuration, plus clocking is for each channel done directly at each DAC with a technique called DDS (direct digital synthesis) which takes clock induced jitter to immeasurable levels.Build QualityThe M1 is robustly constructed of milled and CNC machined aluminum sections. There is no typical bent metal chassis and top cover found on most products. All sections of the construction, the front and rear panels, the sides and even the bottom and top plates start out as solid blocks of aluminum which are precision machined to shape, with exact tolerances for a perfect fit. These parts are then anodized and the text and markings and are laser etched for a clean and enduring look.The SoundThe intention if the M1 is to provide a state of the art, Digital to Analog converter, utilizing the best designs and materials that can be found today. The D/A converter is a very critical part of the digital audio chain, after all you have to convert it to analog to hear it, and we feel this should be a true as possible in its reconstruction of the original signal. The sound of the M1 is intended to be transparent and revealing, and fully dynamic. This in part is made possible by the lowering the jitter to extremely low levels, providing a pure digital signal chain with no SRCs ( sample rate converters) or digital volume controllers, superior digital filter design, coupled to a fast transparent analog signal path with a discreet analog output section and plenty of good clean linear power for optimum analog performance.Many hours of listening were done to tune the M1 to an exacting sound, with all types of music, and with extensive testing done in the studio and in the home. For all headphones The Phonitor x offers connections for standard headphones with jack plug and for balanced headphones a 4-pin XLR connector. Thanks to the enormous output power of 18 watts, all headphones are driven effortlessly. Finding the middle is not always easy. By our very nature, hearing can be leaning more to the left or more to the right. This is especially obvious when listening with headphones. That’s why Phonitor x has the uniquely finely resolved laterality control. With it, the center can be found perfectly. With the mode switch you can choose between stereo or mono playback. To the right, the laterality control is switched on. It has ultra low distortion, very wide bandwidth and low noise. The technical performance of the MX-DAC is on a par with any other DAC at any price. Jitter is about 12pps, s/n ratio is -116dB (‘A’ weighted), linearity is +0.2dB at -116dB, stereo separation is -104dB at 1kHz, frequency response is ruler flat and distortion is 0.00025% at 1kHz and 0.0003% at 20kHz. These technical figures are state-of-the-art and show that our implementation is almost perfect, to ensure completely neutral and accurate digital-to-analogue conversion of any digital input.The MX DAC has inputs for: 2 x coax (up to 24bit 192 kHz PCM), 2 x optical (up to 24bit 192kHz PCM) and asynchronous USB up to 24bit 192 kHz PCM as well as DSD 64 and DSD 128.Also, all inputs whether from coax, optical or USB, are processed in the DSD domain.
