Valve microphone with Abbey Road’s REDD.47 preamp built in
The REDD Microphone is the first new EMI-badged microphone in over half a century. It continues a tradition of innovation dating back to the early ’30s and Alan Blumlein, the father of stereo, and was designed by Chandler Limited founder and chief designer Wade Goeke.
It is a large-diaphragm valve condenser that combines microphone and preamp in a single handcrafted device: the valve REDD.47 circuit is coupled directly to a custom handmade platinum membrane capsule. It can be used with or without an external preamp. Its look is classic, but it is not a clone or derivative of any other microphone, and it is protected by patent.
Microphone and preamp in one
The idea behind the REDD Microphone is simple: the shortest possible distance between the two most important elements of the recording chain, the capsule and the preamp. The REDD.47 circuit, the valve amplifier of Abbey Road’s REDD.51 consoles, sits inside the microphone body, right next to the capsule.
Big, velvety sound
That proximity delivers a larger-than-life, full-bodied sound with a velvety smooth top end. The handmade platinum membrane capsule was built specifically for this circuit.
Tested at Abbey Road
The REDD Microphone was tested extensively at Abbey Road on many sources and against some of the most famous microphones in history. The studio’s former chief engineer, Peter Cobbin, put it through everything from acoustic guitars and percussion to vocals and full symphony orchestras, and it stood out in almost every application.
Control from the power supply
Because the REDD Microphone has its own preamp, part of the control sits on the external power supply, which carries the continuous output control and Low Contour. You can therefore set level and low end from the control room without entering the live room.
NORM and DRIVE gain
On the microphone body, the REDD.47 gain has nine positions, from +4 to +33 dB in NORM mode. DRIVE mode adds gain and punch for more colour options, from clean and open to dense and saturated.
With or without a preamp
Thanks to its built-in amplifier, the REDD Microphone can go straight into a line input or converter, or through your favourite preamp for yet another character.
For every source
The REDD Microphone was designed to cover many sources: vocals, strings, piano, drums, bass, electric and acoustic guitars. Cardioid and Omni patterns are selected on the microphone body, together with the 10 dB pad and phase reverse.
A complete package
The microphone comes with its external power supply, a shockmount, a 7.6 m 7-pin Mogami cable and a flight case with custom-cut high-density foam, so it travels safely from studio to studio.
The EMI legacy
From EMI’s first microphones and the “Blumlein pair” technique, the company has always played a central role in recording history. The REDD Microphone, designed by Chandler Limited with Abbey Road, continues that story.
