The handsome AE509 is the more living room-friendly model of the two floorstanding loudspeaker designs in Acoustic Energy’s flagship 500 series. Showcased at The Bristol Hi-Fi Show in 2019, the top-tier series introduces carbon fibre drivers to the Gloucestershire-based loudspeaker specialist’s continuously evolving portfolio. The company believes that the lightweight material delivers a step up on pistonic power and precision over its ceramic/aluminium drivers. Its low weight to strength ratio brings improved driver self-damping and the material has been used in mid and bass driver designs elsewhere. Acoustic Energy is one of a few to also use it in the design of its 25mm dome tweeter. This decision presumably helps to achieve cohesive voicing between the tweeter and the dual 125mm drivers in the AE509’s two-way, mid-tweeter-mid/bass (MTM) configuration. Super structureAt the time of launch, 500 Series designer and managing director Matt Spandl commented: “We have spent considerable time developing the carbon fibre transducers and perfecting our unique cabinet technology. The results have been proven and I’m confident we’ve developed a new flagship range with exceptional sound, build and value.” The new series introduced the AE500 standmount priced at £1,050 (£1,250 with dedicated stands) and AE509 floorstander at £2,400. The range has since been bolstered by the AE520 floorstander introduced last year priced at £3,650 – an imposing 1.13m tall six-driver arrangement in a three-way configuration offering greater power handling. Lust for lifeThe AE509 claims 175W power handling and is suitable for medium to large-sized listening spaces. It feels understated in my living room and I love the eye-catching lustre of the black high-gloss finish and the way the slim, modern styling contrasts gracefully with the decor of my home. The AE509’s frequency response is quoted at 32Hz – 28kHz (+/- 6dB) with the handover between mid/bass and tweeter drivers at 2.9kHz. Speaker impedance is rated at 6ohm. Standing strong The aluminium bracing at the base of the cabinet incorporates four large spikes to aid floor decoupling and reduce room interaction. This also widens the speaker’s footprint to help stabilise the cabinet’s slightly top-heavy proportions.

After a decade of trials and development, the AYA loudspeakers are housed in a unique, UK manufactured cabinet moulded from glass-reinforced cement. The process of moulding the AYA loudspeaker cabinets was developed alongside a UK-based company who are best known for bespoke concrete furniture and installations.Rega fans out there will know that we have always questioned the marketing and science surrounding turntables. Experiments and research have allowed us to debunk most commonly held beliefs and use real engineering to produce world beating sound quality at sensible prices. However, the loudspeaker market is very different because a valid scientific and engineering discipline exists which in turn has created hundreds of competitors in the loudspeaker marketplace. The success of many loudspeakers depends on powerful marketing, eye watering advertising budgets (of which Rega spends zero) and financial inducements to retailers. The funds that most loudspeaker companies would spend on marketing, Rega has put it all into research and development to achieve a totally unique cabinet construction.*Loudspeaker grilles are available as an optional extra and will be supplied separately. To keep costs as low as possible and avoid unnecessary waste, we have chosen not to include the grilles as standard as the majority of customers choose not to use them. These grilles are simple attached by magnet to the front plate screws to prevent cone or tweeter damage. They are covered in quality speaker cloth material minimising any impact a fitted grille may have. Images of the grille are available in the gallery section.Not unlike real wood veneer, GRC has its own characteristics. Each cabinet will be uniquely different due to the manufacturing process. Changes in shade and small surface holes in the cement are common and an expected part of the design and are not a fault. We feel these features add character to these unique cabinets.
Custom made high-quality Advanced EBLT drive belt.ADVANCED EBLT UPGRADE DRIVE BELTThe advanced EBLT drive belt is fitted as standard to all Planar 1, Planar 1 Plus, Planar 2, Planar 3 and Planar 6 models.Each belt is moulded on our highly accurate custom tooling using a unique secret blend. Once moulded, the belts are cryogenically frozen and barrelled to remove any excess flash in order to create perfect cross-sectional roundness which is critical for accurate speed and stability. In normal use and conditions, the lifespan of the EBLT drive belt is 50% longer than the previous model.Below you can see a direct comparison taken from our custom test software. You can compare the old belt (top) versus the latest EBLT reference belt (bottom). We have used the same Planar 1 turntable. The only part that has changed is the drive belt. You can clearly see a notable reduction in weighted peak Wow / Flutter measurements produced by the increased accuracy and cross-sectional roundness of the EBLT belt. The standard belt measures 0.253% / the Advanced EBLT measures 0.162% and the Reference EBLT measures 0.075%

Compact and powerful, Sopra N°1 is a concentration of technological innovation. It features "NIC" magnetic circuit, TDM"" surrounds for the midrange woofer and Infinite Horn Loading (IHL) of the tweeter. It is a true "demonstrator", corroborating the contribution of the new technologies implemented on Sopra.First, the very low distortion gives it incredible clarity and very high definition combined with the spectacular spatialisation typical of bookshelf loudspeakers... Beyond this attractive first impression, what's astonishing is the texture and smoothness of its sound. It provides a solid, "fleshy" sound with full and articulated bass. Precious is by no means artificial, nor is the limited to the treble. The overall coherence and harmonic richness gives the listener a surprising understanding of the music. The Sopra line is destined for the most passionate sound enthusiasts. Its design favours performance, whilst bringing together the qualities expected of an object which will be integrated into very elegant interiors and décors. Lacquered or bloodwood finishes are associated to noble materials to create an elegant line. Substantial efforts were made to give the front a tidy appearance, particularly around the speaker drivers, to iron out any aspects which could afflict the acoustics or the appearance. Ideal for small rooms up to 270ft2 (25m2), Sopra n°1 is also ideal for spaces up to 550ft2 (50m2). Providing high sensitivity and excellent power handling, Sopra N°1 is a true little monitor for the home. Sopra N°1 is supplied with a special stand which has been designed to expel interfering vibrations from the enclosure towards the floor to avoid any colouration. The steel frame inside the floorstander, coupled with the 03⁄4" (19mm) thick glass base using four adjustable stainless steel spikes, provides very high transmission speeds. This is what guarantees an extremely sharp reproduction.NIC (Neutral Inductance Circuit)Since the beginning, we have always had a great interest in the magnetic circuit, an essential aspect of a speaker drive unit. The precision and detail of audio reproduction depends on the stability of the magnetic field. After having pushed back the limits in electromagnetic technology with the Grande Utopia EM and the Stella Utopia EM, our engineer discovered that the magnetic field varies regardless of its intensity. Indeed, it is not stable because it is modulated by three factors: the movement of the voice coil (Lenz's law), the current passing through it (Foucault current) and the frequency. Consequently, the voice coil, the moving part, is in the magnetic field which becomes too variable, and this leads to loss of precision.The NIC technology lies in a Faraday ring whose dimensions, materials and positioning we were able to optimise to make the magnetic field be no longer affected by the position of the voice coil, by the amperage or the frequency of the current passing through it. This solution permits to control the magnetic field to decrease the effects of distortion and give the sound a very high-definition and an unprecedented dynamic.TMD (Tuned Mass Damper)The midrange register is no doubt the most complicated to control in a sound system.Thanks to the power of finite element analysis, our teams have revealed resonances which alter definition in the suspension which connects the cone to the basketThe solutions already known for increasing the damping properties of the suspension all result in an increase of the mass which consequently alters definition. The answer came from a technology used in earthquake-resistant skyscrapers and which is also used for the suspension on racing cars. This technology is called a " Tuned MAss Damper" : an additional mass oscillates in opposition to the resonance frequency to control it.Our Tuned Mass Damper consists in simply two tubular rings on the suspension to avoid deformation of the cone without afflicting the dynamics. It reduces drastically the distortion and increase the definition.IHL (Infinite Horn Loading)Our Beryllium tweeter features an incredibly light and extremely rigid dome, that deliver a transparent and dynamic sound. Its main limitation comes from the compression of air in the cavity behind it, that create interference with the incredible definition. To overcome this, the ideal would be to have a nearly infinite volume. But the requirement for Sopra to be compact meant that as much of the cabinet as possible had to be used for the bass. We had to explore other options for loading the tweeter, which led us to come up with the IHL system.The rear of the Beryllium tweeter is loaded via a small cavity which is connected to the exterior of the enclosure by a horn. whom inside is filled with a damping material. Sound waves from the rear of the tweeter are delicately and gradually absorbed. Its acoustic impedance approaches zero so that no resistance alters the movement of the dome. This reduces distortion by 30% and pushes definition to its maximum.

Some other manufacturers cartridges may have a deeper body than Rega cartridges, these will sometimes require the use of the three-point spacer to allow clearance of the rear of the cartridge from the vinyl.When Rega arms are fitted to turntables from other manufacturers it may be necessary to add our Rega arm spacers to achieve the correct arm height.Note: On Rega turntables, spacers should not be necessary unless you are you using an exceptionally deep-bodied cartridge from another manufacturer.Arm height or V.T.A adjustment can be a controversial subject. Rega believes that the integrity of the arm fixing onto the arm mounting board is much more important than the questionable facility of arm adjustment. The arm should be reasonably parallel to the record surface or slightly lower at the mounting. The only time a spacer is necessary to raise the arm height is if the rear of a cartridge is hitting the record whilst playing.
