A new version of the Phoenix soft knee stereo valve compressor, the Phoenix Standby: new features include a standby switch which is provided to extend valve and capacitor life. When in 'standby' the HT current through the valves is only 50% of the normal value. The zero level meter adjusters have now been front to the front panel to make calibration easier and to avoid having to take the unit out of the rack.The Phoenix is a twin channel 'vari-mu' device. When compared to other handheld vocal microphones, the KMS 105 offers a superior resolution of the voice, with extended frequency response and accurate transient detail. Sibilance problems common to other handheld condenser mics are eliminated. No foam is used in the basket, thus eliminating any clouding or muffling of the sound. Also, by using a DC-polarized studio condenser capsule, all the nuances of the voice come through with subtlety, power and focus.The K 105 capsule was developed from the K 50, found in the KMS 150, KM 150 and KM 185 microphones. The K 105 features a supercardioid pattern, achieved by specially modifying the response of the K 50 pressure gradient transducer. The frequency response characteristic is developed in the acoustic realm, allowing for accurate representation of transient details found in music and speech, and thus transmitting a very open and detailed capture of the human voice. Due to the tight supercardioid polar pattern and the coloration-free off axis response, a very high level of gain before feedback is achieved. This polar pattern offers the highest degree of isolation while still allowing for a generous sweet spot in front of the microphone. The dynamic range of the KMS 105 is 132 dB, allowing reproduction of the artists full expression, without restraint. The maximum SPL is 150 dB and with a low self noise of 18 dB-A, a greater gain can be used without risk of adding noise to the mix. This way, the artist is able to use the microphone at a greater distance therefore maintaining a wide range of creative freedom during the performance. Because of the superior resolution and linear high frequency response, it is very easy for the artist using in-ear monitors to identify whether or not he or she is on mic with the KMS 105. And by employing a transformerless output circuit, this microphone can incorporate long cable runs with no loss of signal quality or high-frequency response. Most of the available vocalist microphones rely on the attenuating effects of foam layers inside the basket. Although this is certainly a cost-effective procedure, the detrimental effects of this foam layer can be shown quite easily. Treble frequencies are attenuated, and furthermore the polar pattern can be deformed. These drawbacks can be eliminated by selecting open mesh constructions. With careful dimensioning and selection of different mesh sizes, excellent pop and wind attenuation can be delivered. In the KMS 105 a combination of four wire meshes with different mesh sizes is used. The chosen combination yields a very constant polar pattern, while maintaining the capsules acoustic frontal frequency response. The Rooster is a valve based design mic/line & DI pre-amp with EQ and a distortion section based around the same 5725 valve used in the ever-popular Culture Vulture.INPUT STAGEThe input stage uses a custom 1200-ohm input Sowter transformer and an ECC81/12AT7 valve.EQ SECTIONThe neatly laid out EQ section has all the Boost or Lift controls on the left, with a broad bass lift control, peaking at 60Hz, and a selectable mid/high lift at 2.5k, 4k ("bell" shaped) and 7k (shelving) respectively. All the Cut controls are on the left hand side, the mid cut is 700Hz, the 6 position bass cut is straight off the Earlybird 2 pre-amp. There is also a switchable LPF ( low pass filter ).'ATTITUDE' DISTORTION SECTIONThe same 5725-distortion tube which is employed in the Culture Vulture is used in the new Rooster. It offers a subtle distortion characteristic in the triode position, more so than a Culture Vulture due to the higher HT voltage, and so has a very low (about 0.01%) distortion when the 'Attitude' control is set to 1. In the pentode mode it generates more 3rd harmonic distortion. Distortion can be pretty radical when the Attitude control is to 'Max' and the input is high.OUTPUT SECTIONThe output valve is ECF80 which combines high output with low impedance (less than 100 ohms). There is +48v phantom power, and phase reverse. The output is unbalanced as standard but a balancing transformer option that is used in the Culture Vulture Mastering will be available.
The Tube Vitalizer looks impressive, with a nod towards vintage valve equipment. It is a 2U steel box, with a bare metal front panel.There are plenty of black knobs, and three grilles revealing glowing tubes. Actually, most of the glow comes from the lamps illuminating the little VU meters.Below these, two old-fashioned black knobs are labelled "ATTENUATOR". Switches light up red when pressed in, apart from a couple of metal toggles, and there are blue LEDs to show High and Low frequency compression. When you switch on, your attention is drawn to two LEDs, proudly labelled "TUBE STATUS", with the "WARM UP" one glowing for 45 seconds before a relay kicks into "ACTIVE" mode. During this 45 second period the circuitry slowly builds up to 250 volts to increase the life of the valves. This is sensible, but I am not sure that the LEDs are really necessary. The back panel features XLR connectors and also plastic balanced jack sockets for inputs and outputs. The unit runs at +6dB instead of the more usual +4dB. Jack connectors are also set to +6dB operation, unfortunately without a switch to enable -10dB operation.
